Technical Challenges

  • Thermoset materials cure irreversibly under heat and shear, so any excess residence time or temperature causes the resin to set inside the screw and barrel.
  • Abrasive fillers (glass fibre, mineral) in BMC and DMC compounds wear screw flights and barrel bore rapidly.
  • Low compression requirement means standard screws over-shear and pre-cure the material before the cavity.
  • Cured material build-up in the barrel or on the screw requires frequent cleaning and downtime.

Rootier's Technical Solutions

  • 01Low-compression screw geometry engineered to minimise shear heat and prevent pre-cure during plasticising.
  • 02Hard-chromed screw and barrel surfaces that resist abrasive fillers and release cured resin easily.
  • 03Bimetallic-lined barrels for wear resistance against glass- and mineral-filled BMC/DMC compounds.
  • 04Optimised L/D ratio (12:1–18:1) that keeps residence time short and temperature controlled.
  • 05DC53 and bimetallic screw tips that survive the abrasive, curing feedstock.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Epoxy, phenolic, polyester, PU, silicone, melamine formaldehyde — undergo irreversible curing when heated.

  • Electrical insulators/connectors, automotive under-hood parts, appliance housings, composite matrices, adhesives/sealants, high-temp resistant parts.

  • Precision temp control, large feed zones with minimal shear, barrel should equipped with oil cooling channel for temperature control.

  • Crosslinking inside screw/barrel from excess temp, long residence time, or contamination causes blockages, defects, reduced output, and dangerous pressure buildup.

  • Glass/mineral fillers and flame retardants increase abrasiveness. Must account for filler type/concentration, enhance wear resistance via coatings or bimetallic construction, and consider impact on cure chemistry & flow.
